The City of Bangor is close to route 80, has a population of about 5,300 and is only about 75 miles west of New York City. It was named after the famous slate mining town, Bangor, in Wales. Due to the area's reputation for superior roofing slate, school blackboards and floor tiles. Bangor was the center of commerce during the booming slate industry in the late 1800's. The City is currently actively pursuing a Historic Preservation Program to preserve the wonderful variety of architectural styles of the downtown buildings,  mostly built between 1890 and 1910. The Slate Belt Heritage Center and the Slate Belt Museum are examples of the many  places to visit and see artifacts from the surrounding area whilst learning of the community's diverse cultural and Slate quarry heritage.  

Stop in at the Broadway Pub for a beer and chat to some locals about its close knit community vibe. The downtown area is in the throws of being renovated and has seen a renewed interest from small business such as coffee shops and ice cream parlors.

For the kids, Apple Blossom Village in Mount Bethel, is a family run fun-farm open year round and offers a fun family day out and has many unexpected activities to choose from.
